Traditional clothes of Uttar PradeshUttar Pradesh is fifth largest as well as the most populous state of India. Its large variety of culture, tradition, crafts, art and architecture have made the state to gain lots of popularity throughout world.

Uttar Pradesh’s unique dressing style distinguishes it from other states of India. “Saree” is the traditional dress worn by majority of women. The saree worn with a top, popularly known as blouse. Women also wear wide or narrow pants known as “Salwar” with long top termed as Kameez”. They also wear knee length attire called ”Lehangas” with medium length top or blouse. All these apparels are artistically embellished with embroidery works and vibrant prints. Uttar Pradesh is famous for its exquisite creation of Benarasi sarees.

The traditional dress worn by men is long & loose shirt known as “Kurta” or half shirts called “Gangis”, long garment known as ‘Dhoti”, a scarf known as “Angauccha” and turban. On formal occasion, instead of wearing “Kurta”, they wear long coat known as “Sherwani”. However, this dress is prevalent amongst the rural men of Uttar Pradesh. Due to the impact of globalization, men have become comfortable with western outfits such as t-shirts with trousers.

Along with these attractive traditional dresses both men and women adore themselves in fascinating jewelleries. Women usually wear gold, platinum, silver necklace, rings, earrings, bangles etc, while men wear platinum or gold rings and thin chain. Thus, the distinct dressing style and vibrant hues of the outfits manifest cultural diversity of Uttar Pradesh.
